The Metabolic Shifts of Midlife
Dr. Helena Brandt, Clinical Lead, Metabolic MedicineJune 9, 202620 min
Many people arrive at midlife feeling that the rules of their own metabolism have quietly changed, and that the strategies that once worked no longer do. They are right, and the explanation is physiological rather than a matter of effort. This course lays out what actually shifts and, more usefully, what moves it.
Estradiol has a direct hand in how your body handles glucose and where it stores fat. As levels fall and fluctuate through the transition, insulin sensitivity tends to decline and fat distribution tends to move toward the midsection. These are measurable changes with measurable markers behind them, which means they can be tracked and responded to rather than simply endured.
Muscle is the lever that does the most here, and it is also the one most often overlooked. Lean mass declines with age unless it is actively defended, and because muscle is where much of your glucose is handled, protecting it changes the metabolic picture more than almost any other single factor. The clinical work is in sequencing — knowing which marker to move first, and in what order the rest tend to follow.
This course will give you the mechanism and the markers your physician watches, so that the changes you feel have names and the plan that addresses them has a logic you can follow. The point is not to restore the metabolism of your twenties. It is to build the strongest version of the one you have now.
