Hormone Therapy: What the Evidence Actually Says

Dr. Adaeze Mbeki, Clinical Lead, Hormone TherapyJune 2, 202618 min

Few areas of women's health carry as much inherited anxiety as hormone therapy, and most of that anxiety traces to a single set of headlines from more than twenty years ago. This course is a careful walk through what the evidence says now, so that your decision rests on the current picture rather than a fragment of an older one.

When the Women's Health Initiative results were first reported in 2002, the coverage compressed a complicated study into a simple alarm. In the years since, reanalysis by age and timing has changed the conclusion substantially. For many people who begin therapy near the onset of the transition, the benefit-to-risk picture looks very different from the one the original headlines implied.

Timing is the variable that does the most work. The same therapy started in your early fifties and started in your late sixties is not the same intervention, and the evidence treats them differently. This is why your physician will ask carefully about where you are in the transition before discussing options, and why a generic recommendation rarely fits a specific person.

What this course will not do is tell you whether hormone therapy is right for you, because that is a clinical decision made with your physician and your complete picture in view. What it will do is give you the same framework we use — the questions that matter, the evidence behind them, and the reasoning that turns a panel and a history into a plan you understand.
